Helen Lucas Architects awarded commendation in Saltire Society Housing Awards

Grange Loan has been awarded a commendation in the Alterations, Renovation and Extension category of the Saltire Society Housing Awards.

The property is a Listed Building and had been derelict for a number of years. The existing lodge house had only three small rooms, which are now the main living space. The house has also been extended with two contemporary wings. This provides a kitchen on the ground floor and - by utilising the slope - a bedroom wing on two levels, ground and lower ground.

Helen Lucas Architects detailed the modern materials carefully to ensure the quality of finish would compliment the existing historic building.

The judges commented:
"Client and architect worked closely and intensely to restore and extend a derelict gatehouse in the leafy Grange, Edinburgh. The existing stone building and discrete two-storey extension have been carefully planned, crisply detailed and beautifully executed. The compact internal layout and restrained palette of materials allow the new extension to nestle quietly and respectfully around the existing building."
