Taigh Na Coille
Living Spaces
Taigh Na Coille translates as 'House of the Woods'. This house is designed to be both part of the woods of the landscape and constructed and clad with timber.
The site is within the Moidart National Scenic Area by the shore of Loch Ailort. The ground is a mixture of rock formations and peat sloping quite steeply towards the water.
Taigh Na Coille is sited to sit low in the rocky landscape, looking out over the water, with shelter from a stand of Scots pines. The position on site was carefully selected to take advantage of the views out to Goat Island, the longer view to the islands of Eigg and Rhum and the view back to the summit of Rois Bheinn.
Cladding is Siberian Larch, left untreated to weather. The clients wanted the house to look well crafted, like a piece of furniture. The fine grain of Siberian Larch, and T&G profiled boards were selected to give this appearance.
The house and surrounding deck sits on a green oak pegged frame, chosen to touch the ground lightly with minimum impact on the sloping site. Internal spaces spill out onto external decks: habitable outdoor space within the wilderness.
A double height living and dining room is formed by an exposed frame of green douglas fir, visible above the sawn green oak posts.
The carefully selected position takes advantage of views out to Goat Island, the Small Isles and the view back to the summit of Rois Bheinn.
