Wester Coates House

Living Spaces

We first worked with the owners of this stone-built Victorian house in the Coltbridge and Wester Coates Conservation Area of Edinburgh more than ten years ago. The work carried out at that time opened up the ground floor of the house and a generous extension was built connecting the open-plan family spaces to the sunny back garden.

Ten years later the owners got in touch again, wishing to extend upwards into the previously unused attic space.
A new pared-back douglas fir timber interpretation of the original Victorian stair now leads up to the light, airy second floor housing children’s bedrooms, a playroom and bathroom. Floor and roof levels have been altered to ensure a ceiling height in keeping with the proportions of the rest of the house and a fully glazed dormer offers incredible views of Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills.

A new master suite has also been created on the first floor with a bespoke dressing room and elegant bathroom with original features retained. A calm yet sophisticated palette of blues and monochrome used throughout tie the whole house together.
