West End Flat

Living Spaces

This Grade B listed ground and lower ground apartment in Edinburgh’s New Town Conservation Area has been completely renovated and refurbished.

The kitchen / dining space has been fully opened up to the stairwell and entrance, providing daylight and a connection to the garden as soon as you enter the property. A solid oak parquet floor has been laid throughout the ground floor and a curving oak stair replaces the previous dark, cramped stair and links the living spaces to the bedrooms on the lower ground floor. Downstairs, subtle alterations to the plan have resulted in a bright, open hallway, generous bedrooms, clean, uncluttered shower rooms and bathroom and a practical utility space.

The original window panelling, shutters and elaborate cornices have been carefully restored and, where missing, reproduced throughout the property. Lowered ceilings have been removed and original door heights and styles re-instated.

The owner has used a restrained palette of greys, whites, monochrome and natural materials for decoration and furniture throughout. Colin Parker Furniture, a local cabinet-maker, supplied the bespoke kitchen as well as various pieces of specially commissioned furniture. These include the hallway ‘settle’ in a lightly smoked oak; the living room drinks cabinet in a dark heavily smoked oak; and the children's fitted bunkbeds in a white oiled birch ply.
