Despite its central location within the Royal Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh (RGBE), Inverleith House requires development to rationalise its layout for the modern-day visitor. Our proposal of listed building refurbishment works will respectfully and conscientiously restore the late Georgian property, all while developing the site to become an integral visitor element of the RBGE.
REFURBISHMENT
Our proposal is for improved fire compartmentalisation and upgraded electrical fittings throughout the property to ensure the safety of visitors and longevity of the space. Existing doors and windows are to be overhauled to enhance the internal climatic control and thermal efficiency of the gallery, crucial both for the conscientious display of artwork and the RBGE’s commitment to the environment.
DEVELOPMENT
Accessibility is key to the development of Inverleith House. Both visual and physical connections will assist the opening up of the ground floor level to emphasize the new route through the building. The proposed landscaped ramp and accompanying entrance platt will soften the gallery’s formal façade, supporting moments of interaction with the building itself and artworks on display. A permeable and welcoming route allows visitors to flow through the building, creating curiosity, framing the spaces and the landscapes beyond.
