Ingleby Gallery Calton Road

Work Spaces

From a dilapidated nightclub building at the back of the Waverley Station we have created light and generous new premises on three levels for Ingleby Gallery, one of the country's leading private art galleries.

The largest gallery, on the first floor, is flooded with natural light and commands views across the city. All areas required careful attention to detail to give a clean and uncluttered backdrop to the works being displayed.

A smaller gallery is located on the ground floor along with an open plan print retail area, reception and welcoming entrance area.

An important move was to introduce a cascade solid oak stair at the rear of the plan connecting all three levels with a finely crafted recessed handrail.

Private offices, a library and a private viewing room are housed in the lower ground floor away from the noise of the street and railway.

Working with HLA has been a genuine pleasure and has resulted in a world class gallery for contemporary art. Helen and her team have created a building in which the architecture speaks quietly but eloquently and which is a privilege to inhabit.

Our favourite detail is the hidden handrail. - Alec Finlay
